I got an email from my mom recently complaining about my post in response to the death of legendary bigot Jesse Helms. While I don’t think the post was particularly mean-spirited or unfair (particularly given some of the other things I have written over the course of a lifetime of acid-penned scrawling), I did take her email to heart. Maybe I should try to revolt against my Cubs fan pessimistic nature, re-name myself “Happy Dude.” And while I certainly don’t feel joy about the death of Jesse Helms, maybe I can gather up a few threads of positivity in a world where there are still men like Jesse Helms out there making policy.

So let’s start with the fact that I just learned that there is an architectural treasure recently re-discovered in my home state. That’s pretty cool. Wasn’t even torn down or anything!

And then there are these cool Alabamians, taking a stand and fighting against the cruel whims of Alabama Power, one of the more evil utility companies that you’ll find anywhere. The issue may not have been life or death, but it does inspire one that you can stand up to the bureaucratic machine and maybe even win sometimes. Who knew that Alabamians would dare to engage in the proud traditions of tree sitting?

Also in the good news department? The minimum wage is going up. And also, members of our military are getting some much-needed rest. Reasonable people are finally considering reasonable solutions.

OK then Gloomy Gus? We need fewer Eeyores and more cheerleaders! See? See? I’m doing it! (Note: “it” refers to smiling, not to taking Enzyte).
